how do people make edits with this?

i've tried to make an edit, and i've seen tutorials, but it never works out the way i want it to. the edits i see are amazing, and i wanted to create something like that.

and when i'd put the audio in, after a few seconds, it would slow down and sound weird. what's that all about?

After Effects is a huge, complex application with which professional users spend years accumulating skills and techniques.  Your use of the word "edit" (AE is not an editing application) and your confusion about how the interface works suggest you don't really have a grasp of the basics in AE, so of course you can't expect to be matching the amazing work done by seasoned professionals.

If you are serious about learning AE and making great video, you need to start at the beginning and learn the basics.  Expect to spend a few days up to a few weeks to grasp the basic functions and make basic animations.  Then you can start expanding your horizons as you grow to understand how things are done.  After Effects can be very rewarding, but you need to put in a lot of time and effort to do so.
