how to open after effect project version 13.5 with 17.5

trying to do a tutorial that i believe is version 13.5 -- it's just a rotoscoping AE tutorial. i just updated to version 17.5, but even before then it gives me the error messages and when AE opens the video files look like the old school TVs looked wit the different colored bars across the screen.

saving as the current version didn't work. not sure what to do. appreciate the help!

Those color bars mean that the footage cannot be found. Either the directory structure is incorrect or the files are not on the system. To fix the problem just right click on the missing footage in the Project Panel and select Replace footage, then search for and link to the footage you want to use in the project.

Sounds like you are new to AE. I strongly suggest that you spend some time with the User Guide.
