Is there a shortcut that replaces "home" key?

Use Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow to get the same result as Home key.
Or you can just adjust/change keyboard shortcut for that function - or any other - by going to Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts

I am on a mac, and control+option+left arrow, or, command+option+left arrow, doesn't seem to do it.  I have tried every possible combo+left arrow, but maybe I am missing something.

I will make a shortcut, if there is no other way.

Use the Keyboard Shortcuts Visualizer to create a shortcut for the Home key - there is no other alternative.

That is weird. If you are on mac Command+Option+Left Arrow should work for you as Home (the same as on win Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow works). That's default AE keyboard shortcut list (After Effects keyboard shortcuts reference )

If somehow it does not work for you. You have to map shortcut of your chosing to that function. Example:

On the Apple standard keyboard:

  • HOME is Function Left Arrow (Fn + ←).
  • END is Function Right Arrow (Fn + →).

So...

  • Go to End of Composition, Layer, or Footage Item is Fn+Right
  • Go to Start of Composition, Layer, or Footage Item is Fn+Left
  • Go to End of Work Area +Fn+Left
  • Go to Start of Work Area +Fn+Right

Also, Karabiner (https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/ ) allows users to restore the extended keyboard keys that Apple used to remap over the standard keys.  This freeware brings back most of the former remapped keys if the “use standard fn only” mode is enabled.   I find this particularly useful for quickly selecting layers with a standard keyboard.

Ok. I'm not Apple user so I figured that somehow Apple does not have Fn key or there is no fn home keyboard shortcut (as it is on small laptop keyboards with windows on board) that is why I sugested remaping or alternative combination. But if there is fn home (fn arrow) combination there should not be any issues with using those.

imeilfx:  It's a good suggestion.

All of the Apple PowerBooks/iBooks and the 1st generation MacBook Pros had the extended keys remapped over the standard keys.  I've missed having them around ever since Apple took them away.  At least Home, End, Page Up and Page Down stuck around via the Fn key and the Arrow keys.  Karbiner's been a great help, but if I know I'm doing extended AE work on my MacBook Pro I just connect a full keyboards (as ridiculous as that is).

It would be great to see a 15-inch and/or 17-inch from Apple with either the extended keys remapped again or just the full set of keys.  (I'm definitely not holding my breath for that one.)

Hopefully, luckyafka comes back and marks one of our answers as "Correct"!

Since screenshots make it as easy as it gets...

On the Apple standard keyboard:

  • HOME is Function Left Arrow (Fn + ←).
  • END is Function Right Arrow (Fn + →).
