Does anybody know how I back out of this? I need all my layers to be visibile but even if I turn off the layer I can still only see that layer in the preview and nothing else, only if I double click on another layer can I change layer but then I also can't see the others. I'm assuming I've entered isolation mode but I don't know how to return it to normal. Can anyone help?

There is no "isolation mode". It's just the source/ layer viewer vs. the comp viewer. Click on the navigation tabs at the top of the viewer panel to change where you are or click in the timeline or double-click on the composition in the project panel. Since this is very basic stuff, I strongly urge you to read the help and watch the introductory tutorials or you'l never get anything done.
