Importing Vector layers from Illustrator to After effects

Hello, I imported an Illustrator file into After Effects (Composition - Retain Layer sizes)

My problem is I can't seem to play the timeline without a flicker effect with this muliticoloured error graphic. I am also unable to extend the length of each layer that is stuck to 5 frames. I think I am inporting it wrong.

Is there a better way to import vector layers into after effects from Illustrator?
