Issues when pasting one layer into another Ae project

Hi, guys

I'm wondering if there's a correct way to copy and paste a layer from one project into another.  I'm on the latest version of Ae, and I've got a bunch of effects such as particles, saved as individual files.  I would like to bring in some of those layers into a separate project, but when I do that, the layer comes in as "deleted file." Sometimes there's a black screen accompanied, and sometimes the layer does appear, but as a tiny quad that can't be transformed or worked with at all.  Does anyone know how to get around this issue?  I'm a MacBook Pro user, OS X Sierra, Radeon560, and I'm on the newest update of Ae.

You can't copy-paste an AE layer into a different AE project. But you CAN import one AE project file into another one... which accomplishes what you want.

as Dave says you can import one project into another but you can also save effects as presets so that they can be applied to other layers inside other projects.

Animation presets are critical to my work. I have created more than 200 of them that do everything from flying a lawer in and out of the cameras view with some plans in motion in the middle based on nothing more than in and out points to all kinds pretty complicated effects.  They are a huge timesaver and well worth a couple of seconds of your time save them in your own custom presets folder.
