Layer

I want to add a layer for a certain duration, hide it, then add another layer for another duration. 

 

ie. layer 1 will run for 20 seconds

no layers for 6 seconds

layer 2 will run for 13 seconds

You can set here the time of the layer that you are going to insert in the timeline, but I agree with Rick.

Sounds like you are trying to edit a movie using After Effects. That's almost always a really bad idea. Each comp should be a separate shot or at most a short sequence. You should do your editing in Premiere Pro. Having layers run for 20 seconds is quite unusual. 

 

If you are just doing graphics on top of a video then you should explore the Essential Graphics Panel and learn how to create MOGRT's. They will save you hours of rendering and fiddling with AE.

I figured it out. On Windows I selected CTR + SHFT + D to cut the layer times I wanted.
