Layers lost. Can't select

Hi experts. Some layers in my composition have greyed out and I can't select and move. Although, they do render and preview. Can someone help me?

What I have tried is copying layers to a new comp. It did work for a few layers. But when I copy all layers, it does the same thing. My total layer count is 1270.

There is a bug where this happens after you create 700 something layers. You have to pre-compose some of your work, which would be advisable, anyway.

Zoom out in the Timeline too see the time span of the Layers from left to right.

If you remain zoomed in (as seen in your screenshot), press I or O while Layer 990 is select to go to the In or the Out.

I find using the keyboard shortcuts very helpful when working in Comps that have hundreds of Layers and are several minutes in duration:

  • Go to Earliest In Point of Selected Layers, I
  • Go to Next Layer In or Out Point, +++RightArrow
  • Go to Latest Out Point of Selected Layers, O
  • Go to Previous Layer In or Out Point, +++LeftArrow

When working in project with this level of complexity, it can be helpful to pre-Compose Layers based on scenes and use Label colors to quickly identify and select groups of Layers.

With hundreds of Layers, it's also helpful to have the Timeline on a high-reslution, vertical display.
