I got your private message. I don't see any overlap in the layers. The easiest way to achieve what you want is to precompose all of the layers that you want to have the red solid under. That gives you a single layer in the main comp that has all of the in and out points.

Then you can simply move the layer to the bottom of the timeline and put the red solid below it, or you can use Set Matte on the Red solid to make the Red Solid layer visible only when the pre-comp is visible. I hope you followed that. The comp would look something like this. Main comp - ready to pre-compose:

Set Matte makes Red solid visible only when the pre-comp has no transparency.

 I hope this makes sense.

Break up the comp into smaller segments. Sounds like you are trying to use After Effects as a video editing app and it is not an NLE. Never was. AE is for creating shots and short sequences. Render them, then assemble them in an NLE.

They are all the same PreComp correct? Open that PreComp and put the png in there?

I'm just trying to follow this:

  • You have 154 instances of the same precomp?
  • You want a red solid to appear in the precomp, but naturally don't want to have to add it 154 times.  Can you add the red solid to the precomp?
