Question

No media loaded when put Premiere sequence to After Effects

I finished edit some videos in Premiere Pro (v13.1) and import the sequence into After Effects (v16.1.2) using dynamic link. The sequence can be import and can be viewed on the preview window in After Effects, but when I try to create a composition, it doesn't load any media into it. The composition is empty. Any ideas? Thanks.

This problem only occurs when you have an after effects composition on your premiere pro sequence. For example, you are editing a video on premiere pro and now you want to edit a specific video clip on after effects, so you right clicked on the video and select 'Replace with after effects composition', now this video will turn into a composition and will be highlighted in a peach color. Now, if you try to import the sequence on After Effects, it will not be able to show up as a video on the composition.

To fix this, the only solution I know of is to remove the composition from the premiere pro sequence, save your project and then import the Sequence on After Effects. Now you will be able to import the sequence as a video on the After Effects Composition.

It's so strange that after I trashed the preferences of both apps, the PP sequence/media can be import and loaded into a newly created AE's comp. But when I try to load it into my AE's project that I created a month ago, it still can't be loaded.

Correction : can be import and loaded into a newly created AE's Project (NOT comp).

I'm not following your workflow or your question. Have you looked at the user guide or are you just poking around in the UI and experimenting after seeing a couple of tutorials by some enthusiasts?

    • Creating a composition in AE adds no media to the composition
    • Selecting footage in the Project Panel in After Effects and using the File/Create New Composition From Selected menu will create a composition using that footage
    • When you choose "Replace With After Effects Composition" in a Premiere Pro sequence the entire source footage will be added to the After Effects Project Panel and a new composition will be created using the footage and the in and out points of the footage will be set in the composition timeline
    • If you double click on any file imported into After Effects that is a video file the Footage Panel will open allowing you to set an in and out point for that footage that will be used the next time you select that footage in the Project Panel and choose to create a new composition from the selected

I think your only problem is that you have not done any homework. There are no bugs in this process. It is also usually a very bad idea to select everything in a Premiere Pro sequence and create a new composition from an entire edited movie. You can very easily end up with a mess that is very difficult and time consuming to work with. If you cannot create the effect or transition or composite you need to tell your story in Premiere Pro, then use After Effects. If you can do what you need to do in Premiere Pro or any other NLE, then everything you do in AE is a waste of your time.
