Open Project / Save as Not Working

I have installed After Effects 16.0.1 (build 48) from the Adobe website and have started my 7 day trial.
However, I cannot save a project, or even open a file.
When I click any of these options, nothing happens. No dialog box is opened. Not even off-screen.Auto-saving doesn't seem to work either. No project file is created.

Choosing Import - File... also gives an error: "After Effects warning: ClassFactory cannot supply requested class"

Dragging footage in manually works, however.

My PC:
Windows 10 Home
Intel Core i7-7700 @3.6GHz
16GB RAM
64-bit OS
Nvidia GTX 1080 (latest drivers installed)
No second monitors installed or attached.

Quicktime is installed.

I installed windows 10 clean, so no plugins or third party software is installed.

Let me know if I can provide any more relevant information or screenshots.

Correct answer SpaceFroge

I chose to install windows 10 again and reinstall After Effects. Now it is working. No Idea what changed.

What I did, in case someone has the same problem:

- Use bootable USB with windows installation software

- Format every Disk during the setup to erase all content and files

- Install Windows 10

- Install every update through windows update until none are left

- Install Quicktime
- Install GPU Driver (nvidia GeForce experience - latest driver)

- Install After Effects

That's all I can say for now.

So we're going to say the correct answer is to completely wipe all your hard drives?  Really?

I vote to "unmark" this answer as correct.

Completely wiping your hard drives and doing a clean install of windows and all all your software will fix ANY problem but it should be an absolute last resort.

I don't think we should be encouraging people (who might know any better) to do this.  I mean what other solutions were attempted?

Was the CC cleaner tool used?

Was tech support contacted?

Usually a correct answer implies there was some understanding of what the problem was and how to fix it.

Wiping your system clean implies there was zero understanding of the what the problem was or how to fix it.

From reading the comments, it looks like there was an issue that cropped up during the Oct 2018 Windows 10 update and with a smaller possibility, GPU drivers. Anyways, it's good that you've sorted out your issue.

I had the same issue and I found this was the cause.

I was using a custom windows 10 high-contrast theme called GreyEve theme. It was working fine with the previous build of windows but once I updated to the October 2018 creators Update the problem started.

As soon as I turned this theme off the file explorer windows appear fine in After Effects.

Were you using a different windows theme before you reinstall windows?

See if the options here are helpful - Premiere crashes whenever I open Windows Explorer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I now see AE also crashes when I click output to in the render queue when rendering.

Renaming Grooveex.dll solution from the mentioned thread: I don't have Office or OneDrive installed on my PC, so there is no Grooveex.dll interfering, nor can I rename or delete it.

Starting AE as administrator: Doesn't work. I also cannot drag-import footage this way for some reason

So something is preventing AE from opening Windows Explorer dialog boxes such as save as, or open project. Or even making it crash when attempting to choose output to.
