Please Help - After Effects and Premiere Pro Dynamic Link problem and 'Not Responding'

Hello,

I am having a huge issue with my current projects on After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Whilst both projects are open (when either new or after a workaround to open the project with issues) I can use the Dynamic Link effectively and work on both applications with no issues at a fast speed.

When I close the software or turn off my computer I can no longer open the After Effects project I was working on. Premiere Pro does open but the After Effects project shows the 'Not Responding' Icon. The Premiere Pro project also loses all the links to the After Effects project that I am unable to access.

I am working off a brand new PC - RYZEN 3600 5 6 core 12 thread, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1660 6GB.

I have tried troubleshooting the problem online using other similar community suggestions and found a workaround by moving linked files to different locations on my drive and then using the task manager to close down the software and adobe dynamic link. This allows me to access the 'Not Responding' project with all my needed compositions, however, all the links to my shots from the Premiere Pro project are missing and so I have to restart the process of linking the shots back into After Effects to start my composition again which is heavily time-consuming as I'm 3d tracking the shots so I can create Null Objects to add other comps to the tracking points.

I am now suspecting that there may be some underlying issue with the primary Premiere project file where I build a sequence to import into After Effects.

Is there something key that I've done wrong that may have caused this issue and more importantly is there a solution so I do not have to start from scratch again?

Thank you.

If my comp one shot from premiere pro and it is going to render at the rate of several frames a second and it is pretty basic, I'll keep it dynamically linked to Premiere Pro. If it gets at all complicated I'll create a new folder in Premiere Pro for VFX renders, select the shot that I need to process in AE, change the label color in PPro, change the clip name, Copy the clip in Premiere Pro, Paste the clip in an empty comp in AE that has the same frame rate and frame size, then press Ctrl/Cmnd + home to move the clip to the first frame of the new comp, press "o" to move to the out point of the clip, press "b" to set the end of the work area to trim the comp, and give it the same name as the clip in Premiere Pro. You avoid that nonsense by using Dynamic Link to create a new comp, save the comp, then undo the dynamic link in Premiere Pro. When the comp has been rendered to a suitable Production format line Cineware, which supports alpha channels and can be Trillions of colors and is pretty compact and universally readable, I drop the rendered effects shot into the VFX folder and then drop it above the original footage in Premiere Pro.

The end result of this workflow is a Premiere Pro timeline that doesn't have to render to playback, shorter turn around, more control, and a better ability to do my job and meet a deadline. As far as I am concerned Dynamic link is just an easy way to pull a few shots into After Effects so they can be processed and rendered. Maybe 1 in 10 of the films I produce and edit has a dynamically linked comp in the final product. I hope this helps.

Hey Rick,

Thank you for the detailed response.

I clearly need to work on and learn more about workflows between the applications to ensure I am working efficently and correctly to help minimise issues.

I'll take all this on board with my next project.

Thanks again!

All the best

James

From my experience, DL is resource-heavy and tends to break apart when either the PPro or AE (or both) side is heavy or becomes heavy. Under such cases, it's best to pre-render. And you should take note of the 'heaviness' of the DL assets and map this out as being 'too heavy' for the system you are using. More RAM is often a good solution or a good way to prevent such disruptions when using DL..

Hey Roland,

Thanks for the reply.

I am still curious as to why I can still work perfectly adequately in a new project throughout the whole day and the Dynamic Link seems to be fully functional with no issues. If it was insufficient RAM, would it not be causing frequent issues during use?

For instance today, I brought in a relatively small sequence from Premiere at 1080p into After Effects, applied some minor stylize adjustments to the clip, and then exported from premiere pro with no issues. Then when I try to reopen the project file in After Effects it proceeds to crash, even though the sequence and compostion are small. It seems to be occuring in a small project with minimal demand.

This process was similar to one of my more demanding 4K projects the previous day where my computer was running smoothly and I was able to work throughout the day and managed to export rough cuts with no issues.

The issues arise when the following day I return to either of these projects and try to open the After Effects project, where it proceeds to crash and have the 'Not Responding' icon.

Is this all RAM related, as I was hopeful my PC would be fairly comfortable with 4k projects, especially a small 1080p project with some minor After Effects comps.

I'm very new to After Effects so could you briefly explain how I would go about pre-rending a composition in After Effects. At the moment I work within the Dynamic Links and then export directly from Premiere Pro. I have managed to Export a 4K project with multiple heavy clips from After Effects and it completed very fast.

Thank you again.
