Question

RAM preview very slow after 2023 update

After updating to version 23.0 something got wrong with the RAM preview. It that doesn't function as it used to, and the preview is extreamly slow, to the point that it is almost impossible to work.

I tried cleaning the cache, and enabled multy-frame rendering, but it didn't change much. Something is wrong...

Looking forward for a fix!

(Windows 10)

I'm having the same issues since the latest update. Nothing on my computer or within my project file has changed but suddenly this same project is taking me almost hours to do what I've done in minutes. I've followed all the suggested tips for speeding up AE, I even reduced my project size by having it delete items not used in current Comps. I even split up the project into two different project files for the first and second half of this 1 minute animation.

Nothing is working.

Has anyone heard from Adobe yet about this?

I have deadlines to make!

Same here.  I find AE 2023 struggles in ways that weren't issues in 2022 and 2021. Media Encoder too has similar issues -- crazy long renders sometimes, plus hangs/crashes mid queue -- all issues I hadn't had anywhere near to this degree in 2022 and before. For the last half of last year we continued working exclusively in 2021 because of these issues but now that we can't open 2023 projects in 2021 and the fact that I don't think you can even install 2021 anymore, I feel like I'm being forced into using 2023.   While I appreciate the new track matte system and the colored keyframes, the UX improvements shouldn't be at the expense of the most important thing the program needs to do, which is to render.

but this is happening across my entire team (laptops, desktops, all with some variety of specs -- though for reference all use Nvidia cards).

Ironically, I had the same issues with CS6-cc2012, cc2014-2015, cc2018-2019, and cc2021-2022.
it's just... not gotten better. I still have both installed and if I enable all the optimizations on the newer versions, AE is still 22% slower. and that was without multi-frame rendering in CS6.

the crashing and hang-ups are known and expected, especially if you're using GPU, the GPU code is buggy.
basically, AE is now 30. as far as software goes it's a hulking, ancient beast of a machine past its prime, unable to work with the technology of today. We can hook it up with our tech but because it was never made to use large amounts of RAM or GPU's or multi-core CPU's, it's like trying to run a steam engine on the waste heat from battries. it works, but making it efficient would be more work than just building a new program to modern spec.
it doesn't help that windows 10 is similar in that it's just just windows8(windows7(windowsvista(windows...))) and has the relative overhead of a bear inside a volkswagon.

Yeah the RAM preview is terrible and I am on new M1 macbook with 64gb of RAM. More proof that adobe is focused on the social media creators instead of actual working professionals.

Same, at work we have the latest suite and it's insanely slow, I'm using machines with RTX 3070 and takes 20 minutes to render a 30 seconds video of just footage edit, no fx

After effects doesn't scale with core counts or GPU power, it scales with core speeds and bulk RAM.
https://www.pugetsystems.com/solutions/video-editing-workstations/adobe-after-effects/hardware-recommendations/
you can see the requirements here from a system integrator, and they also note that it was fastest in about 2015.

Hi!
I have the same problem but working on an iMac24, I can't do anything without After Effects wanting me to allocate more RAM, I have 16 RAM and have allocated AE 12, have Preview set to Quarter, NOTHING HELPS!
Please, I need some help here!

Espero puedas resolverlo.

Nothing works with 2023 versions. It's insanely slow, bugs up the computer. I have 64GB of RAM and it can't even save a 1mb jpeg file in photoshop without freezing up.

Sorry to hear about the issue, elamrotem.

We can get it checked. Could you share your system specification (CPU, GPU, RAM)? Does it happen with all the projects or a particular one? Are you using any third-party plug-ins?

Let us know, we're here to help.

Note: Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions so that we can troubleshoot properly.

Thanks,

Nishu
