Hi Adobe Community,
I’m encountering an issue in After Effects where I need to export a rendered sequence (preferably as a PNG, TIFF or DPX (16Bit)) that includes:
A fully composited image (foreground and background combined) in the RGB channels.
An embedded alpha channel that represents only the transparency of the foreground (not the overall transparency of the final composition).
I want to simplify the workflow for others downstream in the pipeline. The exported file should:
Show the combined foreground and background in the RGB channels when opened.
Provide an correct alpha channel for the foreground only, which can be used as a mask for color grading or further compositing.
Can After Effects natively export a file where the RGB is the composited image and the alpha channel is based on a specific layer?
If not, are there any third-party tools or workflows that could achieve this?
I’m aiming for a single-file solution, as this will streamline collaboration with other using software like Nuke or DaVinci Resolve. (I know Nuke can do this on a DPX sequence for example). Any guidance or alternative suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes, After Effects can achieve this with some adjustments. While natively rendering an RGB composite and embedding a specific alpha channel isn’t directly straightforward, you can pre-compose the foreground layer with its alpha and render it separately as a straight alpha channel. For a combined RGB and alpha solution, exporting as a TIFF or PNG sequence with alpha enabled should work, but the alpha will represent the overall transparency. For your specific need (foreground alpha only), you may need to create a custom alpha matte for the foreground and merge it manually or use third-party tools like EXtractoR or ProEXR for better control. Nuke or Fusion might handle such workflows more flexibly if this remains an issue.

Thank you for your quick reply!
This is part of a job workflow I’m trying to optimize. Unfortunately, I don’t use Nuke yet, so I was hoping to achieve this using my preferred software instead. Since Photoshop allows for channel separation, I thought there might be a similar way to do this in After Effects.
I’m not familiar with using Extractor or ProEXR for TIFF or PNG exports; as far as I know, these tools seem to work exclusively with EXR formats. If anyone has suggestions or alternative approaches to overcome this issue, I’d greatly appreciate your guidance.
