Render progress bar only sometimes shows?

Does anyone know why sometimes when I export it remains on the render queue window and shows me a lovely progress bar and ETA etc and sometimes it switches back to the timeline view whilst rendering my comp? It's annoying and I'm not doing anything differently. I'd prefer to always have the progress bar, not the useless frame-by-painful-frame playthrough of my timeline.

The only scenario I know of when this happens is when there are hardware acceleration issues and the renderer tries to force the issue, so the first thing to try would be to switch to software only rendering and see if it behaves better.

Hmm. Not sure how likely this is, but I'll look into it anyway. Thanks for the idea.

Without any system info and other details like the render settings and the contents of the project we can't really tell you much.

Well I thought there was a chance those details weren't relevant. I thought maybe it was a simple answer that people knew about.

I'm on macOS 13.2, running AE v22.6. The contents of the project aren't really relevant I don't think because it happens regardless of the project. Sometimes in the same project rendering the same comp at a different time, I'll get this behaviour.

Export settings in this case are a PNG sequence, but again, this happens with other settings too. Sometimes I get the progress bar, and sometimes it jumps back to the timeline view when I hit render and I just have to watch the sequence render out frame by frame as the red progress bar slowly moves across the timeline.
