Hola, segun el video estas usando no la herramientas de suavizar borde (refine edge)s en rotoscopia por eso que no selecciona nada. regresa al panel y seleeciona la opcion adecuada.

Try to select the inner part of the elements or characters, not the border. You are probably selected but the selection goes to the edge of the whole image and not to the edge of the element.
