Saving Cropped Picture as an Image

This may sound ridiculous but is there any way I can save the cropped picture of an object as an image in my hard disk or anywhere within After Effects? I am working on a small video, where I am replacing the head. Everytime I split a layer, I have to crop the face of the actor using Pen tool to apply it to another layer. I was looking for a way that I can actually save the image I have cropped using Pen tool as JPEG or PNG to use it in another projects as I don't have photoshop.

You can export out a single frame from After Effects using the following menu option...
Composition > Save Frame As

You may also find this video helpful. The second half of the video focuses on exporting out transparency.

Hi Michael,

I tried this option and I could save the picture in .psd format only, is there any way I can save it as a JPEG or PNG?

Remember, PSD and PNG are both lossless formats, and they support transparency with an alpha channel.  JPEG is nether of these things and is not advisable to use in a production workflow.

Is there a reason to not use PSD?  It's lossless, supports alpha transparency, native to Adobe software and recognised in Windows and Mac OS.  Since it sounds like you are cropping or cutting out the face in your project, aplha channels may be important.

Fair enough, Andrew. I don't have Photoshop installed in my machine. I was trying to save a picture in JPEG format to view it after saving but I believe I can save a picture as .psd file and import it back to the project whenever I want by naming that file appropriately to resuse.

I will post my observations.
