Screen Blend Mode getting breaking after adding fast box blur

Hello Everyone,

I looking for a answer I have been following along on this tutorial by video copilot Colorful Glitch FX Tutorial! 100% After Effects! - YouTube at about 9:28 he suggests to use a fast box blur on the displacement composition to make the two fractal noise effects blend together. To be clearer I have attached the project file.

To see what I mean we need to go Inside the displacement map composition from what I can tell this happens that messes it all up. The second fractal noise layer "whitelines" gets its blend mode of screen removed.  I can get it back temporarily if I set some of the settings around it jumps back, but as soon as I change something again in the settings of either fractal noise effect it goes back to losing the screen blend mode. See the video here: After Effects Problem - YouTube  maybe it makes it a bit clearer. I am not sure what is happening. It seems like the program knows what is right then when a setting is altered it loses it and I need to change some things in the blend mode/overflow settings to get it back... this doesn't seem right....

Hopefully someone can help me out here I am going crazy with this.

Sorry for the late response got caught up in something else, I redid the video here to maybe make more sense of what it is that is happening: AEProblem Glitch Tutorial - YouTube hopefully you can follow along better in this one.

In regards to a solution, a different blend mode (e.g. add ) doesn't work as the same thing happens when the blur is added to the effects. The only thing that I found that worked was placing the blur effect between the two noise layers, and not, as in the video, below both. Dont know why though.

Try disabling GPU acceleration in the Project Settings - I believe this was what Mylenium had in mind.

Update your graphics drivers and check your GPU acceleration options. Those effects use hardware acceleration and if something isn't right, naturally things will not work as expected.

I just updated my drivers, no change still get the same problem. Also checked the acceleration options, Is there anything specific I should look out for?

Tsk tsk tsk tsk. Please tell Mr Kramer to start using the Effects Input Layer Options feature to cut down on having to precompose a Layer that uses an effect which has another Layer as an effect input. And also, tell him to stop using Fractal Noise and to start using Turbulent Noise instead - Turbulent Noise is much more optimized for speed. The only one area where Fractal Noise is better than Turbulent Noise is its ability to Cycle/Loop its Evolution property. Go do a video reply to VCP's tutorial - you'll be famous in no time.

A short write-up on using the Effect Layer Input Options feature (scroll down or use the Browser page search function -

As for your issue, have you tried one of the other lightening Modes? Add and Lighten should be sufficiently good replacements. I was also not able to follow along with the video you showed - plus 10 for your effort though.

I appreciate your time, sorry about the video I made it quickly to try to show what was happening. It was also quite late and I was frustrated with the problem. I also tried turbulent displacement it works and I don't have the issue I have with fractal noise. However the effect is not the same and really gives it a different feeling that I am not going for. I will redo the video tonight to help show you what is happening. Since I am still having the problem.

Did you try the other lightening Modes I mentioned earlier? They should provide very similar results - that is if they don't cause similar issues. With the other Modes, you can add a basic color grading effect to tweak the results to match your intent.
