I have an image file of a logo that I want to animate, but I'm not sure how to separate the different parts of the logo so that I can apply different effects to each thing in the image?

You can use masks in AE or put the image into photoshop and use masks and layers.

No magic, no trick. Just masks.

For almost all images it is much easier to just open up the image in Photoshop and start making selections and then use Ctrl/Cmnd + j to create new layers from the selections. You'll get better results in less time. There are a ton of good tutorials and examples in the Photoshop User Guide on how to make selections.

When you have the layered Photoshop file completed (rename your layers there to keep things organized) just import as a composition retaining layer sizes, then open up the comp and move forward from there.
