Simple renders taking FOREVER

I'm rendering a simple project in AE 2023 and it takes forever! Like an hour for a 10 second high quality HD render. I've tried various simple projects and it's the same with all of them. I can barely edit a project in AE because it's so slooow.

I can do complex composition projects in Vegas Pro and rendering is fast as hell but AE is crazy slow.

Any thoughts as to why?

Normally I'd be asking which effects are involved, but you said it's simple.... hmmm

Are you rendering using software render only or using your graphics card?  If you switch that over does it improve?  Are you rendering ProRes or MP4, again does swapping the format improve things?

Vegas Pro is an editor primarily and treats video differently to how After Effects does - I get that there's cross over, but maybe not as much as you think.  AE is not a video editor, think of it as Photoshop with Time rather than Premiere Pro with extra effects.  It might just be that Vegas handles the type of videos you are making better than AE.  Without seeing a project example, it's hard to know for sure.

I thought I had GPU on but when I checked the project settings it was off. Turning it on made a HUGE difference with playback/preview and overall speed when editing!  It also did speed up the rendering time so thanks for the suggestion!
