Question

Slow performance on M1 Pro Max

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping to find some help in resolving a frustrating issue I've been experiencing with Adobe After Effects on my high-end MacBook Pro M1 Max. Since updating to the latest version of the software, I've noticed a significant slowdown in performance when trying to sync music with my animation. Even basic tasks have become difficult due to the program's sluggish response times.

I've tried troubleshooting the problem by using the latest stable version of After Effects, the beta version, and even the stable version with Rosetta 2. I also attempted a clean install without any plugins, but none of these solutions have helped improve performance.

It's disheartening to have such a powerful machine that can't handle basic tasks within the software. I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered similar issues after the latest Mac update. If so, could you share any fixes or workarounds that worked for you?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice from this community. Thank you for your time and help!

Hey migueltopsp,

Welcome to the community. I'm sorry for the poor experience. Could you confirm the exact After Effects version (Help > About After Effects)? Are you experiencing poor performance with newly created projects as well? Let us know if you see the issue only while working with specific files or do you see it with every type of task.

Thanks,

Ishan

Hello Ishan,

I have tried using After Effects beta Version 23.6.0 (Build 28), as well as After Effects versions 23.4.0 (build 53) and 23.4.0 (build 53) running through Rosetta 2. Even while using the stable version of After Effects 23.4.0 (build 53), I am still experiencing slow preview times, which is impacting my workflow.

Please let me know if there are any steps or information you can provide to help improve performance. Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks,
Miguel

Hey I've had similar issues where RAM preview does not play in real-time in the last few releases. I'm using the latest MacOS on a 16" 2021 M1 MacBook Pro. Reverting to AE version 23.1 works perfectly fine for me.

However, RAM preview is fine on my 13" 2020 M1 MacBook Air using the latest MacOS and AE 23.5

Hey viralsquirrel,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Have you tried comparing using the same project file to check if the playback is worse on your MacBook Pro? Let us know what type of files and effects you have in your project and if you also see this issue with newly created projects.

Thanks Ishan, I've just installed today's build 23.5.0 on both my M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air and restarted both machines. An AE project file which contains a simple 10sec logo animation made up of shapes and text layers (no external files or audio) plays perfectly fine in RAM preview on the Air but not on the Pro where it struggles to ever play in realtime. Switching off multi-processing makes no difference.
