Space bar randomly stops functioning as PLAY button

Often when I'm working, the space bar will randomly stop functioning as the Play button. I hit the space bar and nothing happens.

My only fix is to re-assign the keyboard shortcuts so that the composition plays when a different button is pressed. But then eventually the same thing just happens with that button.

Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone else know how to fix it?
