v17.5 Camera with orbit null works differently to v17.4

As I've showed in my desktop recording. The camera with orbit null works strangely in the v17.5 version. In the old version, if I parent the camera to a null, it will orbit oriented to the null. But in the new version, it somehow orbits orienting to somewhere else, even I chose the orient to POI tool. Also the moving is shifting when I zoom in the camera. It feels not right.

I am experiencing a similar issue with an existing project in the middle of delivery this week. I reverted to the previous version of AE for now but I'm wanting to find a way to use the new version of AE without it breaking my existing projects.

The issue is I have a comp with no camera but rather 3d layers linked to a null to rotate like a carousel and stay forward-facing by multiplying the rotation value of the null by -1. This simple method has worked fine forever but completely breaks with v17.5. It breaks in a way that isn't immediately understandable.

How did you solve your issue?

I didn't solve this, just trying to get used to the new way of camera movement. In v17.5, if you use orbit null, you have to use Axis gizmo to manipulate your camera rather than the camera tools.

It still doesn't make sense for me cos now I have to use two viewports to make my camera view right. Maybe I will stay in the older version if I can't get used to the new way.

Cheers

Got ya. Thanks for the update.

I'm exploring this more later today to see what the deal is and I'll update if I find anything useful.

It's weird for me because I'm not using a camera but just 3d layers linked to a 3d null and v17.5 still breaks it.

There's a change in the camera tool, no change in the orbit null. The changes are in the documentation as well as instructions to revert to the old behavior.

When you create an orbit null you orbit the camera with the null, you don't use the camera tool at all. It defeats the purpose.

Thanks! it makes sense for me now!

However, could you let me know where is the ducumentation for reverting to the old behavior? I just found the way to switch the function for the hotkeys, like using 123 to navigate the scene. But I didn't find the option to reverse the camera tool behaviour.

I do like the old behaviour, it works really conveniently when I make a map animation. E.g, I animate the camera fly to different location on the map. When I create the orbit null, I still can use the navigating tool to navigate the camera in the viewport to make keyframes which is more intruitive than tweak the axis. In the meantime, I can rotate the orbit to make a subtle rotation for the camera to make a overall orbiting dynamic moving.

In the new way, the difference is I have to move the axis gizmo to move the camera, which is fine, but not very convenient and intruitive in my opinion cos I have to open two viewports.

Thanks for your help!
