You have a completely wrong idea about how little AE actually uses GPU acceleration. As far as AE is concerned, your card is pretty much a waste and will ever only be used to a fraction of its capabilities. Hence there's also no magic trick to make AE use it. the rest we can't know. You have not offered any actual system information or any useful details about the crashes. therefore the only advice can be the standard answer: Update your drivers, fiddle with the settings until it eventually works.
