When I draw a line no anchor directional line points appear and if I close an object it automatically turns into a curved object. I can't get straight lined objects.

Thanks for the assistance. It was actual a setting with my workspace that the Adobe Techs were able to fix on my side.

If you get no bezier handles when you click and drag a point, you have RotoBezier turned on. This explains why you get an oval when you close a path with straight lines.

If Rotobezier is turned on, you have to click and drag to generate a curve and a bezier handle, or you have to return to a point with a sharp angle, hold down the Alt/Option key, and drag out the bezier handles.

Maybe the short tutorial I did a long time ago will help. I'm demonstrating a mask path on a solid layer, but the same workflow works for shape layers and the pen tool.
