Why can't I open AE 2021 files in AE 2023?

Having a hell of a time today. Trying to open AE files from 2021 in AE 2023, and I get all kinds of corruption errors first off. Then if I merely try to save, as soon as I hit the up or left arrow in order to edit the file name, the entire Save As dialog just disappears. It's maddening. What is wrong with AE 2023? This is the first time I've used it and I'm NOT impressed.

Can anyone tell me how I can simply open a 3 yr old file? It's not that long ago...!

Try creating a new 2023 project and importing the 2021 project into it.
