Why so slow?

After effects (18.1.0) is so luggy interface! In my project 500 simple shapes in my project. and the interface is not actually responding. I have a top-end Mac Pro.

• 2.7GHz 24‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
• 192GB (6x32GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
• Radeon Pro Vega II with 32GB of HBM2 memory
• 4TB SSD storage

It's not helpful to render out a QT movie that doesn't show up. And I don't know what you mean by "simple shapes". 500 shape layer paths with 4 anchor points each still makes for 20000 anchor points to calculate. That would be taxing on any computer. Obviously there would be a lot more stress if there would be more complex artwork. Anyway, you have to provide soem usable screenshots or explain better.
