With new version - render suddenly takes an hour

I have a project from about a year ago. It

  1. takes a pre-existing video
  2. chops it up into sections
  3. adds a page turn effect
  4. renders the results back out

This render should take maybe ten seconds.

The client wanted changes so I open the project and render the output file. Except it is soooo slow.

It renders at a normal rate for the first 15-20% of the project and then. Grinds. To. A. Halt.

The estimated time goes from 10 seconds to 2 minutes then 4 minutes then 29 minutes then over an hour ...

I thought maybe it was running out of memory but I show 60% memory available. CPU is only clocking 11%.

I tried changing the render output - uncompressed AVI, MOV, whatever.
Every time, when I watch it speed through that first 15% I think, 'Maybe I've fixed it...' But I never have.
Anything obvious I might be missing here? My recollection from last year is it rendered in about five seconds.

AE 22.1.1

Try increasing the CPU reserved for other applications or disabling Multi-Frame Rendering.

Preferences > Memory & Performance > Enable Multi-Frame Rendering > % CPU reserved for other applications.

While this should only affect other applications while AE is running, it's the most obvious change from the prior versions.

Here are the files. There are only two: the AE file and a single MP4.

Hi Mark,

Sorry for your issue.

In which version of After Effects this project was created? Could you try importing this project into a new blank project and export?

Let us know if it brings any change.

Thanks,

Nishu

Nishu,
I can't tell you in which version it was created; I'm afraid I've saved over that info. 😞 I can tell you that it was created on approximately May 15 of last year, and would have been the current version at the time.

I'll give the import / export a try and let you know.
