I am encountering this error on a brand new mac book pro when running simple effects like drop shadow or pixel sorter. This latest version of AE has been extremely buggy and practically un-usable.

And that is the reason to go back to AE 2018 and use it untill Adobe fix those bugs.

I agree.  Don't be taken in by the supposed improvements and sparkly new features in a brand-new version.

A new release always 1) has incomprehensible bugs and 2) breaks things that used to work flawlessly.

Why do you think they refer to a CC subscription as membership in the Adobe Unpaid Beta Tester Program?

Stick with something that works.  Screw the new features.
