AE Blend Modes with Text

Hi everyone,

I have a text layer on top of a video clip. I am trying to use the blend modes on the text file "Champion is Earned" but no matter what I select it isn't working. Have I missed something? Do one of these layers need to be pre-composed first?

What kind of blend mode? Intercharacter blending is a completely different animal than a blend mode.

To make that work you need to adjust the kerning so the letters overlap.

I will try the kerning. I have not done blending with text yet, only graphics or video so I was thinking it worked the same way but apparently it does not. I will try this and report back.
