After Effects 17.1.4 needs restarting often

After deleting several comps and/or layers and duplicating them again and dragging new comps into another comp to figure out what I’m doing and why something isn’t working right, I keep having to restart After Effects.

Suddenly the cursor won’t work right. It moves, but when I try to select one layer and then select a different layer (no shift key, don’t want both selected) they both stay highlighted and I can’t get that to stop. The only option is to restart.

The way the learning is going, there’s going to be an awful lot of restarting for me. (learning was fine for a while, not great now due to AE not working as shown in the LinkedIn Learning turtorial—tutorial is AE2019 and I’m AE2020)

Any way to get cursor in AE to behave without restarting? Ideas?

Hi evanld,

Sorry for your issue. Please share the following details so that we can troubleshoot it properly.

  • What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS)?
  • Is it happening in a particular project or all of them?
  • Are you using any third-party plug-ins?

Here's what you can try:

  1. Reset the preferences of After Effects: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-after-effects/td-p/10634342
  2. Update your GPU driver if it's not already.

Let us know if it helps.

Thanks,

Nishu

2016 15" Macbook Pro with a Radeon Pro 455 graphics card, 16 Gb RAM, OSX 10.14.6

I was only working on one project and that’s where it’s happening, but I actually have had this same thing happen before. I believe the other times it happened, it was in InDesign.

I had one third-party plug-in (DUIK), but I had never used it and I see no sign of it now—I think I updated AE and DUIK got trashed at the same time.

I have now trashed the AE preferences AND the plug-ins cache for good measure. I guess I’ll restart my computer and see what happens next.

Thanks
