    1. Read the instructions.

    2. Use the lossless with alpha preset.

    3. Understand that media players do not support alpha channels, they always come out black.

Whoever is reading this, please note that the information here is no longer ideal. Apple has discontinued support for AVI files, but, if you're using After Effects on a Windows machine, the preset for "Lossless with Alpha" still renders as an AVI. That means someone working on a Mac won't be able to use the file.

Now, the best way to render with an alpha channel is to follow the instructions here: https://blog.motionisland.com/create-and-export-an-after-effects-transparent-background/#.XkHTJCN7lhE

If you import the file in Sony Vegas....will show appear as a transparent background or a solid background?

There is nothing wrong.  Getting transparency is dependent on a program actually using the Alpha channel. Just viewing it in a media player doesn't qualify for that. You have to re-import it into AE or premiere to verify the transparency.

That's because you tried to set up some kind of custom render without learning anything. You probably picked a format that does not support transparency. Use the presets until you have taken the time to study up and learn about video compression. BTW, you have to either check the alpha channel or put something below a layer with transparency to verify that there is actually an alpha channel.
