Question

Can't paint with brush

Hey there,

I'm having a weird issue. I never used the paint brush before to paint on a frame, I need it to "story board" over some footage, so I watched some tutorials, but it did not work at all. I looked up the adobe help, which says basically the same things as the tutorials, but I can't get it to work...

1. I double click on my footage (not a pre-composition)

2. I select the brush

3. I try to draw over the frame, but I only get a dot and can't keep drawing.

4. I see the brushes stacking inside the paint effect of the layer the more I try, but I still can only get dots.

Thanks for the help!

This is happening to me too and none of these replies are helpful at all. Im trying to draw on a layer and instead of it following my stroke it places a dot on the first click, this happens over and over again and will not draw a stroke..always places a dot. Nothing seems to work, updated... noone seems to have an answer and im paying for some scrappy software that isnt doing what it needs to do

Open the Paint workspace, check the settings. After you draw a stroke press "uu" to reveal all modified properties of the layer with the Paint effect applied. You can tell exactly what is going on with every brushstroke, change anything but the shape of the path, and animate any of the properties that you can find in the timeline. There is also a lot of good stuff in the User Guide.

This is what your UI should look like when you are trying to use the Paint effect:

I don't see anything in this thread that cannot be solved by simply understanding the Paint effect and how to manipulate the strokes.

    Hi All,

The new patch of After Effects(15.1.1) fixed this issue & is live in Creative Cloud app. Please update and let us know the status.

    Thanks,

    Vidya

Paint works fine for me with recent update.

    Windows 10 creators update

    i7 6700

    gtx970

So the problem is either specific to the hardware config or simple user error

Are you on the newest update? Another user posted something similar, but it sounds like it had previously been working as expected. Trying to decipher if this is a bug or simply user error.

The paint and clone tools do not automatically work as most folks expect them to work. If this is a new problem then check your settings. If you are just starting to use these tools please check out the help files and get a little training. Most of the problems I see people have with clone and paint are user error caused by improper settings and incorrect assumptions.

Please post a screenshot of your brush settings.
