convert to symbol

I feel like an idiot but I have to ask. I cannot find the convert to symbol button anywhere. I'm trying to convert a text layer into a symbol to animate but I am having the hardest time finding it. I checked the guide and it keeps telling me to go to modify or insert but I have neither of those in my menu options anywhere. Even when I right click on the layer I do not see that option.

    when you convert to symbol in AI so you group all the elements in one piece so if you do some modification on this symbol it will be update wherever you use this symbol, so to do same in AE you need to put your elements (text, picture, shape....) in a composition than use this composition in you main composition so you will get a nested composition.

    Use the Menu > Layer>Create>Shapes from Text or Masks from Text.

    You'll get a shape layer that you can use all of the Shape Path animators on or a masked solid.

    There is no convert to Symbol. You do that in Adobe Illustrator.

    Uhm...Maybe I'm missing something but I've never heard of this...Are you sure the guide is for After Effects?

    I found out what I was doing wrong thank you for your input. I was looking at a different reference in my book for an older and different application that's similar. Thank you
