Crashes with Workspaces, Extensis, Prefs, etc.

I get the same problem with preferences files and also some kind of clash with Extensis universal type client.

I workat a nee new company and have a new dell Alienware machine - hi spec. Plenty for AE anyway.

Because it's new it's has the 'latest of all things'. Like win 10, creative cloud apps. Drivers and everything. Normally I'd hang back on updates and try and work out how stablue updates are.

Id been using some iMacs at the same co and using the same scripts with no issues but on this new windows machine it crashed several times a day. I also have to trash prefs.

As a workaround I am junking my custom layouts myself before quitting AE now. And some of palettes I open as free floating non dockable scripts. (Opening these with file > script > open)

my set up doesn't like these custom layouts and it's a bit annoying

i don't run many scripts but tend to usually permanently have

Flow

explode shape layers

ray dynamic color

ft toolbar

video copilot - fx console on the go.

not sure if any of those are known to have issues.

It's not ideal but I am getting less crashes when I close al these prior to saving and shurging down.

And I don't need to delete prefs as often. I just need to get the work done or I will be in hot water. Deadlines...

In my work some stuff if very locked down and I inmy got admistrator access in the last few days. I still can't update nvidia drivers.

Are you using Suitcase Fusion? That has been known to cause several issues with AE.

Yes. Well our com uses

the type server Version. And it doesn't work at all. I've had to uninstall it.

I habe suitase fusion at home and that mostly ok but I do have to reset my workspaces every week or so.

Do you habe any links about the suitcase issue? I will show the IT people 

We have 50 designers at our place but only 2 ae motion guys. the other guy has an iMac and it all works. They got me a windows machine and it is having a pile of issues.

Here's one thread about it. A Google search pops up several threads over on Extensis' forums too.

Most of the discussion I have seen about it took place in the Motion Design Artists Slack (a very useful community, by the way, go to hashtagmotiondesign.com to apply to enter.)

According to Extensis, removing the AE plugin should be all you need to do to fix things, but some users have reported that they had to completely uninstall Suitcase to get things to work.

The summary is: remove the Extensis plug-in from After Effects.

If the problem doesn’t go away by simply doing that, there may or may not be an option in Suitcase for disabling it from monitoring After Effects. If all else fails, uninstalling Suitcase will make the problem go away, but obviously everyone's been trying to avoid that if at all possible.

This depends upon when you are seeing the hangs. If you are seeing slowness when you are opening a new composition, you it may be the After Effects plug-in scanning the composition for required fonts.

As you have Universal Type Server, you get access to our priority support team, and I highly recommend contacting them directly as they are best equipped to diagnose what's going on.

Removal of the AE plug-in is an option, but of course, only if it's what's actually causing the issue. Otherwise you lose all font auto-activation benefits, and for some projects, that can be critical.
