EXR in AE

How do I import EXR files and see the full range of colour information?
What I am seeing and rendering currently, the white end of the range is blown out.
I'm using the current After Effects 2020 Creative Cloud fully licensed, which has ProEXR plug-in.

Do you actually work in 32bpc mode? Use LUTs and/or color profiles? Have a reasonably good monitor? Use effects like Compander to normalize ranges? All of that contributes to how much you will be able to see and work with HDR files. A monitor simply only has so much gamut and it needs to be told how to transform non-normalized color info to actually make it visible.

It seemingly makes no difference if I'm in 32bpc. All footage appears blown out. Adjust the apature to view enables me to see the missing information, but that's viewing only and doesn't apply to the render. My monitors are fine. I'm using Macs. On all my previous feature films I've used DPX files without issue. EXRs are new to me.

For example....I render and return to the editor a copy of seemingly the same frames he sent me and they are blown out - same as I see in AE. Obviously this is not acceptable for working or delivery.
