how to create bubble effect - distort background

Question

Hi,

Im trying to create an effect of moving soap bubbles that distort the image beneath as is done in this flyer:

Has anyone got an ideas how to do this? I guess the bubbles act as a mask but i cant figure out what the steps would be.

That's what displacment maps and distortion effects are for. You create a greyscale version of the footage where the bubbles are solid feathered circles and feed it into the Displacement Map effect. Rinse-repeat with other such effects and/ or combinations of different ones. In most cases you will also need to use the displacment map (or more to the point, a cleaned up duplicate of it) as a matte to get rid of the warped edges on your displaced footage.
