Question

Intel Core i5 VS i7

Hi,

Quick info: I'm a student with low to medium budget, working in After Effects but also Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Animate, Maya, 3D Studio Max...

I'm browsing for a new laptop and I came across Acer Nitro 5. However, I have two options. They both have the exact same components (1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, display resolution ect.) BUT I can choose between:

Intel Core i7 9750H (Coffee Lake - 9th gen., 6 cores / 12 threads, 2,6GHz - turbo 4,5GHz)
OR
Intel Core i5 9300H (Coffee Lake - 9th gen., 4 cores / 8 threads, 2,4GHz - turbo 4,1GHz)

Mind you that the latter is definitely cheaper. So there go my doubts. I think have a decent knowledge of such matter, but I'm really not sure, what role does the CPU play in performance of Adobe CC (After Effects especially!). Sure, there will be difference in performance since Intel Core i7 is simply better than i5, but is it so drastic that I will be forced to pay 160$ more? I use Adobe CC for school work, no full time projects (yet).

Thanks for any suggestions!

If any piece of hardware has impact on AE performance, than it's the CPU!

Usualy I would recommend i7 in this case, but for serious AE work you'll need a desktop workstation sooner or later. Mobile CPUs are just not that powerful as desktop CPUs, even if they are from the same product family.

To make the decission easier, ask youself what you want to do with those programs.

Are you just playing around to get in touch with, or making actual projects, maybe even payed?

In the first case, don't invest additional money. If you are interested, your next computer will be much more powerful and meet your needs.

In the second case, get the i7 to keep up with the needs of your clients and yourself.

This article is a little bit old. It might help your answer. It is the article about the benchmark.
