Question

Resolution change makes some clips turn black.

So I’ve recently been working on a project, which I have finished. When I preview the project in quarter resolution everything is fine. Then when I change it to full, some clips go black and when I render it on media encoder some clips are black I honestly don’t know what to do and I have been stressing lately over it. Please answer if you have any solutions or tips for me.

No, you will maintain all the keyframes and effects associated to your layers. You can relink the original files in your AE project with the new ones using the command File > Replace Footage > File once transcoded.

So the clip is from a video do I have to transcode the full video then cut it again or is there a way to only transcode the certain clip I want? And if so do I take the clip directly from the compostion or from whet I imported the full video. Sorry again for my lack of knowledge : )

If you have only one video clip that has been edited, then you only need to transcode this clip and replace it inside AE. If you have multiple edited clips, it is the same procedure: transcode every individual clip to another format and replace them in After Effects.

    Try these possible solutions:

1.- Go to Edit > Purge > All Memory and Disk Cache to avoid AE using old preview files

2.- Try to change the format of your clips. I'm getting these black clips sometimes if they are MP4 or H264 files. Transcoding to ProRes or any other format could solve your preview problem. You can transcode them in Adobe Media Encoder.

3.- Delete the preferences file. As soon as you launch After Effects, hold Command+Alt+Shift keys. you will be prompted to delete your preferences file.

    Good luck!

So to transcode the clips, I need to add to media encoder and change the format but how will that change previewing if that’s where it going to be rendered? Sorry for my lack of understanding but I’m quite new to After Effects.

That seems like a video driver issue.

Try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site.
