FYI: I'm posting this since I haven't seen any updates from the AE Product Team since Q1 2016 (Re: When will Adobe release information about the new multi-core processing architecture that will b... )
While a great 3rd party application (RenderGarden) helps boost the render queue, preview rendering within AE remains incredibly weak. When will multithreading be a part of the AE workflow?
I'm currently on an iMac Pro, 3ghz 10-core, 128gb ram, Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB. Running on High Sierra (although this might have been a mistake to upgrade, I may roll back to Sierra or El Capitan).
Doing something as simple as animating 2d text over a single 1080p ProRes 422 clip previews decently at 1/4 resolution, but previewing full resolution takes about 1 second per frame (without motion blur). It's frustrating to see such powerful hardware wasted on AE.
Even if there's no update coming soon, can the community at least get an update from the product team regarding challenges they're facing and when (+/- a year) we might see the addition of multithreading?
Sincerely,
Everyone
I appreciate your frustration, but the honest truth is this -- don't hold your breath for a response from Adobe. They don't talk about these kinds of things. Those users who may know are under non-disclosure agreements.
So the old phrase still applies -- those who know don't tell, and those who tell don't know.

I can't answer your question either, but if it is taking a second to render 1 frame of type moving over a QT, then something is wrong. On my old 2013 MacBook Pro, moving type across the frame of some HD footage previews in near real-time. Or are you doing some tricky stuff with your type?

My guess is I got too tricky by upgrading to High Sierra. The type is a simple position change, nothing fancy. I've gone through the usual suspects (refreshing preferences, granting proper Library permissions, etc) but there's some unidentified bottleneck. Internal iMac Pro SSD + Thunderbolt 2 RAID 10 external. Any suggestions welcome! Once I roll back my OS I'll see what results I get. Editing in 1/4 resolution works fine for my current purposes, however.

It's possible it could be High Sierra. I have not upgraded yet, so I can't help you there. But that seems insane that the new OS would hurt that much. And I've never used RAID 10, so can't help you there either. Do you have a cache drive set up? I use 50GB from my startup drive (that has all my apps too) and it works fine. Maybe try moving footage to a different drive just as a test. How are you generating the type? If you turn of the footage layer does it still preview slow?

I think it is important to state that its not only the preview rendering that decreases significantly with lower clockrates, the entire program gets slower too. UI gets sluggish and laggy. And this emphasize the feeling of a less responsive program.
Especially with HiDPI screens like the iMac has. To me it seems like Adobe should optimize/re-program their UI system, so it takes better advantage of the the GPU, because it is noticeable slower on a 16core 3.8GHz machine than a 6 core 4.4GHz for me. This in addition to the preview render makes an iMac Pro or other powerful machines a downgrade for After Effects usage.
Apart from that though, I agree. Adobe had a big poll 4-5 years ago, asking what they should focus on. It was an unanimous vote for a faster program. After this, Adobe removed multi threaded rendering and said they would slowly improve the program step by step as it was a big task to undertake. Sadly, it seems they got bored, because the optimizations are getting slower and instead they are feature creeping more. Lately they seem to improve a couple of effects for every update but generally just bloating the software with more features instead (like this latest spring update, which just had multithreaded Noise!!). It's very annoying and it will take DECADES before we even reach the same speeds we had back when multithreading was supported in AE.

Is there any update on this? I have an 18 core iMac Pro that (with adobe programs) is completely useless for doing anything with video. Even Switching between photos in Lightroom is painful. My Final Cut Pro melts through 4K raw footage. My adobe products struggle with a jpeg file. Other users have posted about this last year and I see no adobe rep response. Should I keep my subscription?
