Animate cc freezes when I try to create a symbol

Hi all,

In the last week only, every time I try to create a symbol (F8) or right click create Symbol the stage completely freezes indefinitely. The only way to do anything is to go to Task Manager and end task on the program. I'm running windows 10, which only recently installed but I have managed to create a symbol under the Win 10 environment. Any advise would be awesome. thanks

One possibility is that the new symbol dialog is being opened on another monitor (even if you only have one monitor). Two things that will help show if that's the problem are that if you click around the place you will get chime sounds from Windows. And, if you press the Enter key it should create the symbol with whatever the default name and symbol type is.

If that seems to be the case you might need to go into your display settings and check if it is seeing a ghost display, or just do a reset of the single monitor configuration. Even changing the desktop resolution might be enough. Also try the Reset (workspace name) option inside Animate.

Hey Colin,

You were spot on with the diagnosis, Thank you for that, I went through the steps, interestingly, there was no "binging" when I clicked around the screen but when I pushed Enter it did indeed create the Symbol as a graphic Symbol. If I tried to change the Graphic Symbol to a Movie Clip, it froze Animate cc again...interesting to say the least!

I tried resetting my workspace preference, that didn't help, then I went to settings a converted my display settings to a single monitor - you were right in that as well, I was using two monitors. As soon as I converted it to a single monitor, everything came good.

...and I just converted back to two monitors and it seems to be fine!

Thank you so much for your help with this, it was absolutely driving me crazy!

Cheers Nige

Thank you for reporting how it went. I suspect that Windows monitor arrangements haunt you. You are so wrong to change the number of screens you're using!
