Hi
Sorry I have been at hospital all day with my mum so haven't had time. I mean this file is a client file for I shouldn't be sharing it on here really. Do you know why the animation keys would be there but not the pngs on half the items... such an headache after today

no, i don't know.

Ok cool. At least you never said "have you tried to save incremental versions again...."

Just to be sure that you and @kglad are on the same page here:
@kgladis NOT telling you to save NEW versions of the problematic file that you NOW have. He is advising you to open an OLDER version that you saved before all the problems started.
I have a feeling you are trying to save incremental versions of the broken problematic file here. That would be useless. It wouldn't repair or fix anything, of course. Flash/Animate files may go wonky and therefore it is absolutely essential to save often and save many different incremental versions while working on a project.
So the question is: do you have an older version of your animation project that you saved from before your issues started to appear? You did save incremental versions from the very beginning that you started work on this animation, right?
If you do not have such a version you might be in trouble. The only thing left to do is to save whatever you can by opening the broken corrupted file and copy stuff from that file to a new file. And you may have lost parts of your work.

Ok pal. What is the process to copy a layer from one file to another? I'm a 3D guy man and only been doing this so help out...

Simple: open the original file, create a new file with the same properties (resolution, frame rate, etc.), create the layers you need, then switch to the old file and select the frames in one layer, right-mouse click the frames, "copy frames", switch to the new file, select the first frame in the layer that you'd like to copy the frames into, and right-mouse click "paste and overwrite frames".
It is safest to do this one layer at a time. Then save incremental versions of the new project file after each copy action, just in case.
PS Btw did you try the zip repair tip?
PPS from your answer I deduce that you never did any file versioning? I am aware that this sounds like "meat, after mustard" (as the expression goes), but always ALWAYS use some kind of incremental saving of your project files.
I assume you do the same in Max, Maya, C4d, Houdini, Blender, or whichever 3d app you usually work with.
PPPS I also work with 3D apps (Blender, Houdini, Cinema 4D). Just out of curiosity: any particular reason why you did this project in Animate CC rather than your 3D DCC (because your project seems to consist of bitmaps only)? Perhaps your export target requires interactive output to the web?
*edit* I re-read your answers from the beginning of this thread: the output target is a video? In that case I would have never used Animate CC for a bitmap heavy animation project. After Effects, a 3D app: those are better suited for the job. And much more responsive and controllable.
Anyway. Hope you will be able get it all fixed and finish the job.

I will try the zip thing in a while.
thanks I will try the copy paste thing too.
and yes - I don't know why people keep saying this to me, I'm fed up of it. Yes I do save files but I save as A,B,C,D etc and when I reach Z I go to AA.... I fail to see how this is any different to 001,002 etc.
thanks for your help I will try this - but I'm not sure flash is the way forward.
what is the most stable software for warping 2D images? Yes I use blender and maya but it is time consuming rigging when with flash (animate) warping is fast

no particular reason I used flash (aa). I'm a 3d guy really but don't do much with 2d images in Blender just 3d models. I used maya for many years but my new job involves Blender - I'm not sure if Blender is as simple as flash for warping in a single click.... no idea

Yeah, I understand your frustration about the file versioning thing. It's just that if you had a previous version saved that worked without all the issues that you are experiencing now, you could have gone back to that version (minus some of the work done after saving that previous version).
You say you save files as myfileA, myfileB, etc - so why no open a previous version, and copy some of the missing stuff into that file? Then recreate the lost content.
I use an automated system that does it in the background and also saves a backup to another drive. Just to ensure I never lose any work, because I have been where you are now. It's not a happy place at all 🙂
I'd say After Effects would be your best bet. It has great puppet warp tools (a legacy one and an updated newer one). It is also much easier to animate this kind of stuff in and is similar to how 3d animation timelines work.

Sound. Gonna try all this later and if no joy have to start again and use AFX. Maybe AFX is best for future as well

Yes I have loads of versions but all not working properly in animate v23 or 22.8. V22 it loads with no issues at all but with some animation and library items missing.... I'm going to try versions between 22 and 22.8 next up to see if it works.... I will keep researching and trying. Don't get it at all....

No good with this unfortunately.
I have the animation open in v22.1 and it is working but missing library items on the stage and in library... but the keys are there. Any ideas on this and if it possible to fix?

I managed to get the file back working in AA v22.1. Managed to copy and paste keys over library items by re-importing. Been a long road today - file is all working but still quite slow in parts.
It lkoads in about 30 seconds but worried about the file size as its 4.5 GB! Other worry is that its taking 10 minuites to export the SWF to test even with only some layers visibnle on stage and in publish settings - scary stuff!

Again a corrupted file? I fear that you are hitting the limits of Animate CC somehow with your project.
Have you tried importing separated Animate layers or the entire project) into After Effects yet?
There is a dynamic link option. Might be worth a try, but seeing the problems that you keep running into it may be necessary to do that in parts.

Awesome to hear that you were able to rescue your work!
4.5GB file size? Yeah, I assume that's due to all the bitmaps. You might also have been animating without setting up symbols, which repeats bitmaps all over the place.
I've done similar 2d animation work in Blender, and while it may take slightly more time to set it up in the beginning, throughout the process the viewport remains responsive and smooth, and scrubbing the timeline provides in a realtime feedback. Even rendering such animations is far quicker to complete than a SWF preview in Flash/Animate.
So although it initially takes less time to set up the warping of images, while animating and previewing you lose no time at all and in the end it takes 10 times more time to animate the same sequence in AA compared to a 3d app.
And not even considering the much wider range of visualization possibilities (lighting, true 3d camera, compositing, and so on) when using something like Blender, of course. (ps there are addons for Blender that assist in this 2d setup process.) And of course Blender does full 2d animation nowadays as well.
Of course, it depends on the final intent and content of the animation project which animation tool is the best for a particular job.
A core issue with Animate CC is that movie clips do not play in real-time while scrubbing the timeline. But that can be solved by using graphic symbols for animation work. Still, AA often slows down to a crawl even with relatively simple stuff that previewing becomes a necessity and that slows down the animation process considerably and also prevents an animator to remain in 'the flow'. Personally that really is one of my main reasons for staying away from AA. Aside from the fact that AA is also quite buggy and half-baked (the best performing version remains CS6 by far).
In short, as you have experienced yourself now: all of that mess exponentially slows down doing actual animation work. It's often wiser to invest a bit more time at the beginning in establishing a solid, fast and efficient workflow & pipeline rather than barging in, hoping for the best, and waiting hours for animation previews to finish and fix technical problems. Spending a day or two on prep and recon will often save SO much time and frustration during production time...
PS Before you completely commit to After Effects do some tests with heavy files. After Effects often needs to render previews as well, and real-time scrubbing of the timeline may not be an option at times. For 2d character animation work also check out DUIK for After Effects.

Fair enough. Yes I use Blender for 3D work - just thought AA would be ok for this 2D stuff.... I agree but a bit too late down there line now to switch apps so need to ideally just finish this with AA. Maybe if I convert to symbol it could help me...

I have animating with v23 an animation with a lot of warped items and pngs - probably about 50 library items. The last week it it now taking 8-10 mins to load and also started to crash and lag terribly.
I switched to v22.8 and it seemed better for a day but still took 10 mins to load and using 100% CPU to load!!! It takes 10 mins to load and I get a dialogue now which can't be closed... and some crashes. I have a number of versions but all the same - a work colleague had same issue on load.
The latest thing I have tried (ps. I've exhausted all other stuff such as fast mode, GPU level 2, lowered from 4K to Hd, hidden off screen items, hidden unused layers, deleted unused items et etc)... is to uninstall and reinstall.
we have installed v22 and 22.1 and the scene loads immediately but has half the animation missing - keys the but no library items ...
just don't get this and causing me stress big time..

you should have saved with increasing version number and periodically close and reopen the latest version to confirm it's uncorrupted.
at this point, you'll need to work backwards and then start saving those versions.
if you don't thoroughly understand the above, let me know.
to work backwards, remove about 1/2 the assets from your current project and see if that solves the problem. if not, remove the other 1/2. if both are 1/2's are a problem, you have a mess, but your project can still be recovered as long a you can open fla with all the assets.
if you a fla with ~1/2 the assets works well, start adding assets from the problematic 1/2.
remember to save with increasing version numbers (and testing) to keep everything sorted and organized.

I have saved with increasing letters / numbers and have many versions...
This is nothing at all to do with why the half the animation is missing and why it takes forever to load etc etc.... please do not reply again with this answer again - if you are going to respond please have a useful answer such as "have you tried re-importing the library item and copying keys" or "you could always try a previous version" or "have you tried disabling anti virus" etc etc... a constructive answer and not just the same lame version number response....
thanks

Ok pal.
im just surprised that you don't know what could be causing this if you are such an advanced user. Anyway - Not sure what to do but obviously Adobe Aninate isn't the way forward so gonna have find some stable decent and less laggy/buggy/lame software. Cheers. All the best. Over and out
