Applying both shape and motion tweens to an object

I'm making a simple shape animation where a rectangle gradually changes color while slightly rotating along a path. The video I attached just shows a motion tween with the filled in rectangle rotated and in a different location at the end of the sequence. As you can see, all this did was contort the shape, not rotate it. You can't apply a shape tween to a symbol, but you need to convert your shape to a symbol to apply a motion tween. Anyone know a way around this?

    Hi mate,

Do not use Motion Tweens. Use Classic Tweens.

Here is a sample I made for you

And here is the link to the FLA so that you can see how it was done:

Do the animations for the color change inside the symbol for the rectangle, then animate the symbol.

Do you mind giving me a step-by-step? I've asked this question on other forums, and everyone tells me the same thing, but for some reason I just can't seem to get it to work. I can tween the symbol just fine, but when I try to add a new frame to the animation to create a motion tween, this happens.  A frame-by-frame sequence automatically inserts itself, and when I try to remove the frames, I'm still left with one blank one next to the first keyframe.
