You need to call the stop method on the target MovieClip instance. Like this:

import flash.events.MouseEvent;

function stopMovieClip(e:MouseEvent):void
{
    yourMC.stop();
}

yourButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, stopMovieClip);
