How to edit a duplicated layer without messing up the original?

Hello,

I have imported artwork from illustrator.

I duplicated a layer because I need to flatten and mask it, but whatever I do to this COPY, the same thing is applied to the ORIGINAL LAYER.

Even when I hide and lock the original, the changes still show up.

So how do I edit just the duplicate?

Apparently everthing in your layer is a symbol. Duplicating a layer doesn't create duplicate symbols in the library, it just duplicates the symbol instances. You need to make duplicate library symbols.
