Lasso was working breaking objects up, but not now? Help #confused

I've brought a character into animate and now want to lasso the arm to make this a separate item to animate, but for some reason it's not now breaking the object apart, but selecting each vector shape.

To simplify the problem I've created a rectangle, and now trying to just lasso a random shape off it, but also just selects the whole rectangle.

I'm new to animate, but I know it was selecting just sections before. I think I'm missing something in the software - there must be both options, and I've changed something.

In some situation I'd like to select a whole vector shape, but right now I want to try and just take a section. I'm following a video online, and have got to the arm stage, but my software isn't doing the same as the demonstration. Please can you help.

It must be a setting or mode I'm missing ... ?

    In other words, the lasso only grabs chunks out of raw shapes, not anything else. If it's grabbing the whole thing, it's not a raw shape.

    Thanks that worked. But interestingly even the rectangle had to be broken apart before it would work, so that was also registering as a drawn object rather than a shape

    When you have a drawing tool selected, look in the tools palette to see if Object Drawing is selected. If it is, then when you come to lasso part of it later, the whole thing will select.

    An easy way to make something you've already drawn not be in object mode would be to do Modify/Break Apart. Then the lasso should select only the bit you wanted.
