Lines won't draw or anything in Flash Professional CS6

Hello everyone. I'm trying to use this program for a small project I'm using. I'm using tutorials and everything to try to figure it out, but it's proving difficult.

This probably has a really obvious answer and I'm gonna look dumb when I find out. But whenever I try to draw with anything other than the brush tool, it won't show up. The brush tool doesn't exactly fit what I had in mind, so I thought using a different tool would give me the stroke look I was looking for. But whenever I try to use the pencil, pen, or line tool, nothing shows up. I've tried adjusting the point size, changing the color, nothing.
