Oracle Java licensing (after Oracle license change)

All - looking for some direction on the use of Oracle Java by Adobe in products such as Animate. The version is licenseable. With Oracle's recent change to an enterprise employee metric, how is this being addressed by Adobe or is there alternate Java products to use? A single installation of Adobe Animate (or another Creative Suite product that uses Java) could cost a significant amount of money for any organization. I have not been able to find any clear documentation on the web on Adobe's stance.  Any help or guidance would be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply!

    The information refers to the older version of Java, which is subject to the Binary Code License for Java SE Platform Products (for releases prior to April 2019 for JDK 10 and earlier) and thus does not cover the current scenario, where Adobe distributes with Java SE version 11.

    Java SE version 11 is subject to the Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE  (for releases after April 2019 for JDK 8 through JDK 16). https://www.oracle.com/se/java/technologies/javase/jdk11-archive-downloads.html

    Dear Pernilla,

    This is regarding the query you had regarding Java licensing document. We have checked with all the relevant teams available in Adobe however we do not have any public facing document that we can share with you.

    Alternatively you can refer to third party copyright notice page which refers agreement with Oracle (one of the requirements in contract).

    You can find the reference in A-3908 in third party copyright notice page located at https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/cc/en/products/eula/third_party/pdfs/adobe-third-party-notices.pdf

    That is the best we can provide at this point.

    Hi!

    Thank you for the screenshot – that could be helpful, but when Adobe, once again, refer to Oracle's general terms and conditions for Oracle Java SE - where it is clearly stated that support for Java SE 11 only applies to customers with an active subscription to Java SE, my conclusion still is:  the version Adobe bundle its products with puts Adobe customers at a huge license risk, relative to Oracle.

    For what uses is Oracle Java SE, Java 8 and Java SE 11 updates, free?

    For full information and terms, refer to the OTN License Agreement for Java SE. The OTN License Agreement for Java SE for current Oracle Java SE releases allows them to be used, without cost:

    (i) For personal use on a desktop or laptop computer, such as to play games or run other personal applications.

    (ii) For development, testing, prototyping, and demonstrating applications, including to use by/with profilers, debuggers, and Integrated Development Environment tools.

    (iii) For use with some approved products, such as Oracle SQL Developer, or as an end user of a software application created by an approved product. (referred to as “Schedule A” and “Schedule B” Products in the OTN License Agreement for Java SE) (iv) With identified Oracle Cloud Infrastructure products.

    A single installation of a license-requiring Oracle Java requires that all users in our organization be licensed.

    Hi Pernilla,

    Please find the screenshot attached for the section of agreement which you can refer to . Information referred in notice indicates a separate Agreement. Please note that Adobe and Oracle has executed a private written agreement BLRA, separate from OTN, which provides for redistribution rights albeit certain restrictions. Adobe also has support as per roadmap Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap which covers Java Se 11 release. Please let us know specific concerns so that we can address them accordingly.

    Thanks

    The Java installation with Adobe Animate entitles the user to use it only for Adobe Animate. The Embedded Java executable is not permitted to be used for any other purpose. The document covering the Adobe License Agreement with Oracle can be obtained by clicking the link below.  https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/cc/en/products/eula/third_party/pdfs/Third-PartyNotices_Animate_(2021)_2020.pdf

    Does that mean that it is ok to use Animate without any problems, but you're not allowed to use or publish the result your work anywhere outside Animate?

    so far we still unable to see any clear statement from Adobe that their product is authorized to bundle Oracle Java, such as the latest Adobe Animate -

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Animate 2024\jre\bin\java.exe;

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Animate 2024\jre\bin\javaw.exe;

    Looking for the same information. I've been trying to track this down for months and can't seem to find anything except for a state on Oracle Java use with ColdFusion.

    Hi!
    I have the same question.

    We have tried to get information regarding this for some months now. Since our LSP wasn´t able to get clarifying information from Adobe, I recently raised a support case.
    We need official documents ensuring the rights to install and use Java SE (Adobe) is included in Adobe Creative Cloud for Teams
    c:\program files\adobe\adobe animate 2023\jre\bin\javaw.exe
    c:\program files\adobe\adobe animate 2023\jre\bin\java.exe

    The right to install and use Oracle Java SE requires Java SE Universal Subscription for all users in our organisation - any prohibited installation puts our organisation at very high at compliance risks.

    It´s a big issue since Creative Cloud users (for ex.) can install these applications without being admin.

    I´ll keep you posted about the respons. 🙂

    Interested in this as well.  Would someone from Adobe chime in?  Curious about AEM, specifically on the local developer side.

    Understood.  We're also asking our account team but wanted to bump this thread in case someone at Adobe or in the community was able to chime in.

    Thanks kglad -  The java.exe and javaw.exe are installed under C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Animate 2023\jre\bin\. It appears to be Java 11 (11.0.15.1),  To me this is pointing to the use of Oracle Java.
