I was working in Animate 2021 (Windows) and it crashed - I lost my file and hadn't saved it (I know, I know) but I'd seen it autosave while working on it. After I reopened Animate it didn't prompt me with a recovery file as it usually would, so I found it in the config folder but when I try to open it I get the 'There was an error opening file 'x'"
I assume it was corrupted as the program crashed mid-autosave. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks

usually not. but ~10% of time you can rename that corrupted fla to a rar>repair it using winrar>rename the repaired rar to a fla>try opening the fla.
note: if the fla is ridiculously small no sense bothering.
learn to save your fla with an increasing version number appended to its name. eg, project1.fla>save as project1_v000.fla>next save as project1_v001.fla> next save etc

Thanks for the response. I did find something about using rar files when I googled my problem originally, but I can't work out how to change the file format - usually I can do that just by renaming it, but there's no .fla on the file name to rename where I usually would.
Any idea how I do that? I know chances are slim but it's worth a go if I can get it working!

Hi.
If you're on Windows 10, open Windows Explorer and check File name extensions under the View menu.
For more approaches that may help recovering the FLA, please read this answer:
