Errors in Batch Processing

I'm running Adobe Audition; version 24.2.0.83 in Windows 11.

~500 audio clips were dropped into the batch processing window of Audition. All clips were monaural wav files, 22050Hz, 16 bit. The effect chosen was "normalize to -3dB" and batch exported to a new folder (same frequency and bit depth). Many files are OK and properly adjusted to -3dB. But there are several series of clips where audio from one clip is inserted into another. There are also segments of clips that have missing audio and/or are jumbled with other clips. I did a little searching and found no reports of this behaviour elswhere. This has happened a couple of times now. Any thoughts?

There have been a couple of reports of this happening, actually. The most likely source of the problem is temp files, and access to them, as this process makes extensive use of them.

If you are doing a large batch process, it's best to keep your temp directories away from a space that's directly accessible by your OS - so in a folder of their own, ideally on a fast drive like an SSD. Also, in Edit>Preferences>Data, there's a setting for the maximum number of concurrent file processes, and I never leave this set to more than 2 - you get an interesting warning if you set it to 4 that's worth noting. Generally doing these seems to remove most of the difficulties with weird processing effects.

And yes, I know it's blindingly obvious, but splitting large batch jobs also helps...

Good to know I'm not alone. Where might I find the "temp directories" that the batch process uses and how do I keep them from being "directly accessible by my OS?" Would putting them on a separate drive do the trick? I'm a new user of Audition and I haven't had time to drill down into it very far. THANKS!

Edit>Preferences>Media & Disk Cache - top entry. Don't worry about the secondary temp; we've yet to find out what that makes any difference to. Everything appears to work fine without it!

I've had this happen to me as well. Fortunately I had my original files intact!

Good to know about those ways of lowering the risk.
